Reflexology

Following a strong interest in healing, James Jewell qualified as a reflexologist in 1993, followed by other therapies as below –  and continued to run a busy health clinic in the UK for 10 years. He also taught the technique at Adult education colleges, as well as teaching seminars to doctors to introduce them to this potent therapy.

The ancient technique of Reflexology is one of the most popular and powerful, non-invasive health treatments available. It is thought to be linked to the meridians used in Chinese medicine, and is an extremely therapeutic, highly pleasurable and relaxing way to relieve stress and maintain healthy well-being.

This safe, natural therapy is based on the principle that each reflex point in the foot relates to each organ, function and part of the body. By applying a deep pressure technique to these foot reflexes, it helps to stimulate the whole body’s own healing process and brings about a state of deep, restful relaxation.

All of these treatments are aided by his anatomical knowledge from yoga training.

Living in Andalucia for the last 10 years, he now continues his healing as a synthesis of everything he has learnt, giving treatments adapted to each client and their needs.

As well as working with clients from well renown, beautiful, quality Yoga retreat centers, he also travels to client’s homes or gives treatments from his own studio too.

Swedish massage

Swedish massage may be defined as the manipulation of soft tissue for therapeutic purposes using deep pressure. Massage has both a physical and psychological effect. The various movements, individually or in combination affect the skin, muscles, blood vessels, lymphatic glands, nerves and some internal organs, depending on location and the depth of pressure used. In general the pressure of the movements speeds up the body’s physiology, whilst slow, gentle movements are soothing, calming and relaxing.

James, having been round life’s block more than once , and heading for the future and 70, thank you for your work on my body . Just two sessions have made such a difference to me, my shoulders and legs……
If I lived nearby I would see you regularly….

Hot Stone Massage

is a type of professional massage using specially heated volcanic stones. Because the stones are volcanic they retain the heat for a long time and are said to have healing qualities.

The hot stone therapy lava stones are heated to a comfortably warm temperature prior to treatment and used in combination with the use of Swedish massage style movements and oils to suit your needs.

The heat of the stones penetrates wonderfully deep into the body to help release tension easily – ridding the muscles of toxic waste products and regulating blood flow. It also loosens stiff joints in a very pleasant way. A hot stone therapy massage is very beneficial after exercise, sports or any physical work. Great in conjunction with deep tissue massage.

The hot stones can be used over the whole body or just on the back. The length of the massage depends on how much of the body is used. Generally between 60-90 minutes.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.

Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.

Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.

At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain.

There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Unlike classic massage therapy, which is used for relaxation, deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm

Thai Massage in Marbella

On floor futon (Can also be performed/adapted on a couch)

The overall effect of Thai massage is one of deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and physical and mental well being. It delightfully gets to the places you can’t on your own! During a session, the body is therapeutically rocked and compressed along energy lines and acupressure points, as well as being stretched in different assisted postures in order to clear energy blockages and relieve tension.

The practitioner uses his thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet In this process. Joints are opened, muscles and tendons are stretched, internal organs are toned, and energy is balanced. The recipient normally remains clothed during the session, except if client needs or wants some use of oil as well. The level of stretch and movement can be as gentle or strong as the client wishes, and is always adapted to suit each individual and their particular needs. Duration 60/90 0r 120 mins.

Thai Seated Massage/ bodywork.

This is an adapted form of a lying Thai massage using the same traditional techniques but on a client who remains seated yet supported.
It focuses on the back, shoulders, arms, neck, head and face.
This is perfect for those who aren’t able to lie down comfortably for any length of time and ideal for those who aren’t comfortable with massage treatments on naked skin,
as it is done over light clothing.
As well as being calming and healing, the client normally feels more open, stretched, refreshed and balanced from the session.

Alternatively called Thai Bodywork, as it is very different from classical Swedish Massage. The practitioner uses his hands to apply a very pleasant rhythmic compression along and over energy lines and points that follow the natural contours of the body – the Sen lines. It can help alleviate the “holding” of both tight muscles and thoughts by encouraging correct breathing, through gentle rocking and supportive touch. It will gently stretch and lengthen muscles and slowly help open tight joints.
Like many natural therapies, it has a long history and shares a close relationship with Indian Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, traditional Chinese medicine and Japanese Shiatsu. It reached Thailand around the 3rd century BC.
(Shendau upper body acupressure treatment can also be included as well as part of this session if needed.)

The Bowen Technique in Marbella

A Bowen treatment addresses fascia tissue as well as the muscles and skeleton. Fascia is the sheet of connective tissue that covers the structures of the body – allowing flexibility and movement between various parts of the body.

It is fascia that is, in part, responsible for your posture – so in Bowen we pay it a lot of attention. For example, it affects the way we hold our spine. By influencing the way the muscles and fascia work together, we work to influence the way the structure works – encouraging your spine to adopt a better, less painful, position. We find that his approach often results in a much longer-lasting effect on body alignment than some manipulative therapies.

A classic Bowen Treatment is very gentle. There is no vigorous ‘pulling about’. Rolling moves are made on skin, muscles and tendons and elicit a powerful effect on the body.

As the muscle is held, prior to the move being made, it is gently stretched, sending sensory information to the brain. There are thousands of these stretch receptors and thousands of times a second they repeatedly send this information to the brain about the status of the muscle that is being treated. The brain sends corrective information back to the individual muscles.

Bowen moves are carried out in short sequences at key structural points with a gap of a couple of minutes between each sequence. The client is left to relax in a comfortable, warm atmosphere. It is a quiet time, with little talking, except for the client to feedback to the therapist about any sensations they may be experiencing.

Hands on Healing in Marbella

“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy, and is also a word used to describe a system of natural hands-on healing.

Reiki treatment is a process that anyone can enjoy in the normal course of their life. Reiki can be used alongside other conventional or complementary treatment and often helps to provide emotional support during recovery.

The method of receiving Reiki is simple. The recipient remains clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair and relaxes. The practitioner gently places their hands in a series of non-intrusive positions on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation. The whole person is treated rather than specific areas. Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis and will not predict any specific outcome from treatment.

Each person experiences Reiki differently depending on their individual needs at the time. Clients may or may not feel sensations during a session. Benefits reported by recipients include deep relaxation promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well being on all levels. Some people feel sensations of heat, tingling, or experience seeing colours, whilst others can have an emotional response, indicating that shifts are taking place, allowing harmony to be restored. In general, the most common words people use to describe their experiences are – comforting, supportive, calming, reassuring and helpful.

Sessions can take 45 minutes to an hour-and-a-half, depending on the client’s needs.
